Arbitrator, Smiths Barristers

Mr. Smith is a Chartered Arbitrator with extensive experience in a wide variety of arbitrations involving business disputes. He holds a Masters in International Business Law with Distinction from the London School of Economics. Mr. Smith co-authored the leading text “Law and Practice of International Commercial Arbitration” (2nd ed.) with Martin Hunter and Alan Redfern and is the author of “Serving as the Chairperson in International Commercial Oil and Gas Arbitrations” in The Leading Practitioners’ Guide to International Oil and Gas Arbitration, Juris Publishing, 2015.

Over more than two decades Mr. Smith served as Course Director for international training programs for experienced arbitrators seeking the Fellowship credential with the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. He was a founding member of the North American Branch of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and served as Chair from 2005 to 2008.

Mr. Smith is a qualified English and Canadian Barrister currently practising out of offices in Vancouver, British Columbia. As an experienced arbitrator in complex commercial cases, he recognizes the fundamental importance of impartiality, due process and equal treatment of the parties while maintaining rigorous procedural oversight.
